Monoprint (planotype) with natural leaf stencils and impressions; plant materials remaining in the print
22 ½" x 17 ½"; matted & framed: 32" x 25 ½"
Signed in pencil in lower right.
This work was inspired by the ginkgo leaves and other leaves and blossoms that had fallen on the sidewalk on my way to the print studio. While these plant materials had fallen in a random mass, I thought it would be interesting to view them individually, in this case with a frame of sorts around each one. Think about naturalists and others — all of us in a sense — who are trying differentiate and classify the things around us. It strikes me that this piece is a metaphor for our lives. We strive to make sense of the mass of information, data and sensations that bombard us by focusing on particular elements before they disappear. There is something significant, too, about this piece being in stark black & white.
