A recreation of Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris in Flames using different paper pulp colors
Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris in Flames

Paper pulp painting on handmade paper

28" x 21" (mounted in a box frame, 35" x 27.5")

Signed in paper pulp (“JLA”) in lower right.

This work was made while I was taking a 5-day paper making workshop at Carriage House Paper (Brooklyn). After I saw the shapes and colors on the large sheet of colored paper that I created by pouring different paper pulp colors on a mesh screen (as is traditional in handmade paper making), I was inspired by a sketch that appeared in the New York Times during the workshop. Notre Dame was ablaze. The NYT published a sketch made by a young firefighter that was critical in aiding the firefighters in putting out the fire. The flames and the heat almost caused Notre Dame to collapse.
