A charcoal drawing on white paper of a male face

Untitled study of a head

Circa 2017

Charcoal drawing on white paper

12 ¾" x 10 ½"; total sheet: 17" x 14"

Signed in pencil in lower right.

This portrait was created by subtraction, which means that I darkened a large block on the page (large enough to consist of the entire image). Then I used a kneaded gum eraser to bring out – sculpting, in a sense -- the highlights of the figure. The result is a dramatic image, quite different from the other pieces you see here.
